Colorado Springs, Colo., October 22, 2019 – Colorado Center of Orthopaedic Excellence (CCOE) surgeon Dr. Jason Weisstein is one of the first Joint Replacement and Limb Salvage Specialists in Colorado Springs to offer robotic knee replacement with Stryker’s Mako System. Dr. Weisstein has been involved with robotic technology for orthopedic joint replacement since 2011. The demand for joint replacements is expected to rise dramatically in the next decade. Knee replacement surgery in the United States is estimated to increase by 673 percent by 2030.[v] Yet studies have shown that approximately 20-30 percent of patients are dissatisfied after conventional surgery.[vi]

The Mako total Knee and partial knee applications are knee replacement treatment options designed to relieve the pain caused by joint degeneration due to osteoarthritis. While some patients with extensive arthritis may be candidates for a total knee replacement, there are others who have only a limited amount of arthritis in their knee and may be candidates for partial knee replacement where two-thirds of the knee is virtually untouched. These patients recover more quickly and typically experience less pain because a less invasive surgery is performed. Studies have shown robotic-arm assisted partial knee replacement to be two to three times more accurate than manual partial knee replacement procedures.[vii],[viii],[ix]

Hip and Knee Replacements

Hip joint replacement is intended for use in individuals with joint disease resulting from degenerative and rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, fracture of the neck of the femur or functional deformity of the hip.

Knee joint replacement is intended for use in individuals with joint disease resulting from degenerative, rheumatoid and post-traumatic arthritis, and for moderate deformity of the knee.

Joint replacement surgery is not appropriate for patients with certain types of infections, any mental or neuromuscular disorder which would create an unacceptable risk of prosthesis instability, prosthesis fixation failure or complications in postoperative care, compromised bone stock, skeletal immaturity, severe instability of the joint, or excessive body weight.

Like any surgery, joint replacement surgery has serious risks which include, but are not limited to, pain, bone fracture, change in the treated leg length (hip), joint stiffness, hip joint fusion, amputation, peripheral neuropathies (nerve damage), circulatory compromise (including deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the legs)), genitourinary disorders (including kidney failure), gastrointestinal disorders (including paralytic ileus (loss of intestinal digestive movement)), vascular disorders (including thrombus (blood clots),  blood loss, or changes in blood pressure or heart rhythm), bronchopulmonary disorders (including emboli, stroke or pneumonia), heart attack, and death.

Implant related risks which may lead to a revision of the implant include dislocation, loosening, fracture, nerve damage, heterotopic bone formation (abnormal bone growth in tissue), wear of the implant, metal sensitivity, soft tissue imbalance, osteolysis (localized progressive bone loss), audible sounds during motion, and reaction to particle debris.  Hip and knee implants may not provide the same feel or performance characteristics experienced with a normal healthy joint.

Minimally Invasive Joint Replacement Surgeries

More than one million Americans – the majority of whom are 50 or older – choose to undergo joint replacement (or arthroplasty) each year. Arthroplasty restores the integrity of your joints and improves function using an artificial joint, or prosthesis.

However, if the prospect of enduring traditional surgery to replace a hip or knee fills you with dread, you’ll be relieved to know there is an excellent alternative: minimally invasive joint replacement.

Although traditional surgery is still a popular option among many patients, minimally invasive techniques are rapidly becoming the norm for those looking for a faster and less painful recovery.

What Makes Surgery Minimally Invasive?

With traditional (fully invasive) joint replacement surgery, orthopedic surgeons make large incisions that cut through muscles, tendons, and ligaments as a means of reaching and replacing the affected joints. That results in more bleeding, more post-operative pain that needs to be managed, more vulnerability to infection, a longer scar, and a longer recovery period before the patient regains a full range of motion.

In fact, most of the pain and dysfunction after traditional joint replacement surgery is due to these large incisions, not due to the manipulation and replacement of the bones themselves. As a result, patients need to stay in the hospital for several days and then take several weeks off from work to recuperate.

With minimally invasive joint replacement surgery, orthopedic surgeons make smaller incisions, minimize muscular detachment, and cut through less tissue during the procedure. As a result, there is much less overall trauma to the body, and the recovery period is significantly shorter.

Also, physical therapy is easier after minimally invasive surgery, because it usually doesn’t involve rehabilitating organs that have been severed.

Does Minimally Invasive Surgery Work as Well as Regular Surgery?

A major advantage of minimally invasive joint replacement is that it can be performed on an outpatient basis. Your surgery can be performed early in the morning, and you can conceivably be back home that very afternoon.

Plus, in the case of knee and hip replacement surgery, you could be walking with a cane immediately following the surgery. This means you can recover more quickly than with traditional invasive surgery.

Minimally invasive joint replacement surgery represents a dramatic improvement in surgical techniques. Higher-quality materials from which implants are made have led to a growing number of patients achieving optimum outcomes after hip and knee replacements – and with a reduced rate of post-surgical infection or other complications.

Combined with physical therapy, minimally invasive joint replacement surgery alleviates the stiffness and pain associated with severe arthritis, and it allows for more complete range of motion – thereby enabling your body to operate naturally again.

Knee Pain Doesn’t Mean Surgery: What Are the Alternatives?

Knee replacement surgery can be a tough decision to make, but it isn’t always necessary right away. Prior to taking the leap towards scheduling a surgical procedure, many orthopedic surgeons will suggest trying all reasonable alternatives to knee surgery. Knee replacement surgery is a very commonly performed procedure that involves the resurfacing of the bones of the knee with metal and plastic pieces or components. 

While there is a wealth of information and advertisements recommending which knee replacement to have, and where to have it done, there is very little published knowledge about knee replacement surgery alternatives, or alternatives to treating knee pain in general.

The most common condition leading to a knee replacement is osteoarthritis. This is typically a degenerative condition where the cartilage cushion on the ends of your bones starts wearing away.  While there is no cure for osteoarthritis, there are many alternatives to surgery available to treat the pain associated with it, and thus postpone the need for a knee replacement. Osteoarthritis affects nearly everyone over the age of 60, yet it can also affect those of us in our 30s or 40s if there is a genetic predisposition or a previous injury.

If your pain doesn’t improve with physical therapy, a knee compression sleeve, certain supplements, the failure of non-surgical treatments can ultimately lead to knee replacement proving to be your best available option. However, knee surgery should never be your first option. You can sometimes help your knee pain with alternative treatments instead. You and your doctor will discuss less invasive ways to ease knee pain, which may include:

1. Weight Loss and Exercise: Exercise can help you achieve your weight loss goal while strengthening your muscles and reducing pain.

2. Physical Therapy: A physical therapist can design a regimen that helps you reduce pain and strengthen the key muscles that affect your knees. They can work with you to make sure you’re doing exercises correctly.

3. Knee Injections (Hyaluronic Acid): Knee injections of hyaluronic acid lubricate the knee and act as shock absorbers. They help the cartilage and bone tissues slide more smoothly in the joint. The technique helps to reduce pain and improve knee mobility.

4. Medication or Cortisone Shots: Medication, including over-the-counter pain relievers and topical creams with the numbing agent’s lidocaine or Marcaine, may help control your knee pain. Your doctor might also recommend an injection of either steroids or cortisone.

5. Acupuncture: This ancient Chinese method uses sharp, thin needles to impact nerves and change the flow of energy within the body. Acupuncture has become more popular recently as an alternative treatment for pain.

6. Prolotherapy: Prolotherapy is an approach that uses a dextrose solution injected into the ligament or tendon to increase the blood flow and supply of nutrients. The dextrose solution is a sugar mixture. This treatment aims to stimulate the tissue so it will repair itself.

7. Stem Cell Therapy: This experimental treatment uses bone marrow stem cells from the hip to help regenerate cartilage tissue in the knee. A small but growing number of doctors are turning to cutting-edge stem cell therapy as an alternative to knee replacement surgery.
